Basically it sounds like you have the right idea - delete the geometry for the parts you want mirrored (as you showed in your first image), then unwrap all this remaining geometry. Let me guess you have a Light-on DVD combo CDRW drive? Or maybe a HP drive? There are known issues with those drives not being able to read past the copy protection.
