One thing to check is that your UV W coordinate is zero, otherwise the weld will often not weld when it looks like it should. You can select all the uvs and type in 0 to the W coord to zero them.

About the fact you are seing only lights: Did you pushed the "w" in keyboard while using UDK?? Maya users (like me) tend to use "w", "e" and "r", and "w" in UDK hides all Static meshes in your viewport.
