i wouldnt bother concerning yourself with understanding modeling for normal maps until you can replicate a concept more accurately. The shapes are quite different in the concept to your model.
any game with an online component is likely to be improved by a multi-core processor. it's the cpu that calculates all of the network replication of npc and player positions, health values, items, scores, etc.

I tried replicating your problem. In the 'Render Settings' dropdown, make sure it's set to whatever renderer you want to use (most likely 3dsmax.scanline.no.advanced) instead of being blank.
