^ Hell yes it is. I spent ten years in college, majoring in Avoiding The Real World. Having now graduated into said real world, I can confirm that college was much more enjoyable.
So did I, they seem very awkward, and the guy in the video seemed to struggle with them as well. It would have made more sense to have a "conform" button that simply makes all editable poly tools (like relax) conform to the surface of an object. The brush-based system is just weird... The new UV tools are nice though!
I made it straight in the side view but then I conformed the joints to fit to the geometry. I thought this might be the problem, but I was under the impression that moving the joints or rotating/rotating their orient wouldn't make it flip out so radically. Is there a preferred way to conform the joints to the geometry or…

nice pic. cheers for that. The mesh does look messy but its actually conforming to the subtle wear and tear i had sculpted, so actually even though it looks messy it is actually conforming reasonably well to the mudbox sculpt. To make it more tidy, i would need to flatten the sides of the high poly pillar first.
the most kryptic is "smoothing" which I think is incorrectly labelled and should be smoothing groups, but I'd really like to confirm with some Autodesk documentation which I can't find.
