I'd really recommend for you to become familiar with one of the common engines out there (e.g. Unreal, Unity, Crysis) and go through the complete cycle from creating the asset to exporting it into the engine. Note that the specific engine isn't that important; they have differences, but the skills required transfer well… -

Changing the units setup will sometimes help. I think working in metric units can really screw up the near-clip sometimes. For my latest contracts I've had to work with the metric units, where I usually scale the model up quite a lot, then scale it down once I'm done. for me it works on some models, on others it's a joke, with some geometry it just gives weird/unbalanced results no matter what. actually i prefer the freeware LSCM unwrap plugin for max that was posted in these forums or roadkill for maya for this task, the algorithm they use often seemed to give somewhat better results.…
