Look's like I'm coming to a close on this. Other than a couple more breakdowns and renders or a tweak or two I think I can call it done. :) It's been an amazing learning experience and everyone's input has been so valuable. Re: How to make good lowpoly UV?
There's always a trade-off between stretching and clean uv's, how much you're willing to put up with is likely dependant on your mesh. Straightened UV's have several advantages besides packing better - you'll have no aliasing along jagged uv edges, painting stuff in PS can be easier and cleaner.. also, it soothes my OCD ;-) -

if your set on doing it in modo you bake twice once with floaters once with out and combine the 2 maps in PS, but that seems like a lot of needless work to me. im a failry new modo user but i would have never even considered baking in it, seems to make more sense to just fire up xnormal or max. -

You might wanna try 'Normal Thief' to reorient the grass instances so they get smooth shading. I can't tell if they are always facing the camera or randomly rotated grass patches though. I rendered this in scanline, then just added some fog and contrast in PS. The shading changes with lighting position. It only has 512x512… -

Sounds like a driver issue to me. Is any part in your system overclocked? Overclocking causes all sorts of nonsense as the hardware isn't designed to clock that high. I've seen reports of basic instructions like xor x, x (should always return zero as it flips all high bits in x) failing with as little as a 250mHz overclock… -

@pior obviously it's each man to his own on workflow choices but, I find it a lot less hassle to simply erase/mask/repaint on a layer rather than: go back to DCC, adjust floater geo, export, import, rebake.... Also, doesn't NDO allow this to a degree? Panel lines are just PS layers that can be moved around. -
