I've seen that before when hardware acceleration isn't working at all, even for the windows GUI. What version of Windows are you on? Here's a guess, not sure if this is the case. But could be. Maya is not able to recreate the history when you open the file as it is too complex. To answer my own question: Seems i was right: I get great speedups (up to x10) using the script in Max 2012 and 2013 while trackview is open and animated tracks are selected.
