Your size should have been 1009x1009 with 256 or 64 components, you instead have 1021x1021 with 4623 components (!!)… -

what id your graphics card ? never happened to me. i worked on assets with more than 5 4k maps (diffuse+normal+spec) all displayed with lighting and shadow in high quality. no crashes ever. using maya 2009 win7 64bit 8gb ram and nvidia gtx 460. most likely your graphics card cant handle it or need new drivers. -

More ram and a better video card. I've got 8 gigs and a GTX 460 and I don't have any problems running Max, Photoshop and UDK all at once. Shouldn't be a very costly upgrade. -
