I've not tested this year's version but CC 2018 would wreck grayscale images if you opened and immediately saved them using default settings. And no, it shouldn't do that at all. -

For what it's worth, they also included the full CAT source code with 3ds Max 2018 SDK. So now anyone could go out for bug hunting and fixing :) -

Ah thank you Elias, I already uninstalled update 2018.3, back to 2018. Everything seems fine now. I'll try again moving to 2018.3 if needed.
