It's a clever ruse! They've all "left" Valve to start their own company called Faucet - where they're going to be working on Valves new outsourcing experiment, Half Life 3. you may all go back about your day.
I think until they manage to find a publisher/funding, they're just self funding the project off money that the studio is making from their outsourcing bussiness. If anyone is interested, heres a new screenshot I found http://www.tarsier.se/attachments/switchboardman.jpg
It would be a huge plus on your resume, alot of large studios outsource work to Chinese studios and communication can be a big issue sometimes as well as the way they give and take feedback. If you can manage to learn mandarin you will be a golden god.
Hello everyone, I'm looking to steer and fill some spare time doing some freelance/outsource work. Please feel free to check out my work and PM me if you have any questions. Thanks! http://shogun3d.com
dependent on where you are and what you can do. there is certainly outsourcing companies who work with remote people. you'd not make the california type of big bucks, but it should guarantee you a decent level of income. certainly better than running for the bottom on fiverr
Between full environments and props, I'd focus on the environments. Prop work can easily be outsourced, while a good environment artist that knows how to create those props AND put them together in beautiful, balanced and optimized environments is a very valuable professional
here they probably have the biggest teams and besides that they still do outsource. i would not underestimate the amount of work for some of these games, on top they by far do not release all of their productions, we worked on a few titles which never saw the light of day.
Most of the assets for big name games are built using one of a few large outsource studios that are capable of providing hundreds of staff for a project. internally the number will be much smaller. Turnaround time for an average set of modular props will be anywhere between a week and a month.
Props can definitely get your foot in the door for the outsource studios who specialize in that area. That's where I started and I've seen it happen countless times at this point. I agree though, not as useful if you're looking for a full enviro art position at a studio.
Not bad, should output without to much of a hassle, as a 3d print. Aside from games / film also research toy companies for jobs, mainly outsourced these days but I think global US or Euro brands still have their own inhouse art departments.
