Thanks for the extensive response Kroma. Your right about the lighting and the sky. I used one of the default skyboxes from UDK but like you said it doesn't fit. I'll look into creating a custom skybox that works better with the lighting I have. I was definitely going for the new installation in an old place sort of feel.… -

I think using zbrush/mudbox/xnormal to create normal maps will boost their visible effect, often when putting diffuse textures through normal map generators such as the Nvidia plugin (and NDO to a lesser extent) they don't not provide the same intensity as surface transfer techniques. Something to keep in mind. Once you learn the basics learning workflows for environment art or characters is somewhat easy as far as poly modeling goes. You're using the same extrudes, cuts and chamfers as you do when you start out. You can always do a mixture. Use 3D Motive to start out and get the hang of the programs.… -
