Performance wise, having 2 materials on one object is equivalent to have 2 "splitted" objects with 1 material. Usually i only use this for easier maintenance, as editing several objects in a 3d software could be a bit more of work if they're meant to be "welded" Unity can batch together objects with the same material… -

@zetheros Now that you mention Ghibli, I guess one character I might have thought of without realizing might have been the form No-Face took in Spirited away after being corrupted by the bathhouse, because of his small mask face juxtaposed on a morphed monster body with human-like appendages and large mouths. Seems pretty consistent across the board. Management is inept. It bares out with most of their results. Its sort of an endemic decay. -
