The guy running this stuff is Steve Perlman, one of the creators of QuickTime and pioneers in video compression. That talk I linked above explains why/how it works.
Unity comes with a tree creator package, in that they have a shader for a double sided material. Nature/Tree Soft Occlusion Leaves. Probably not a permanent fix though.
I agree and admittedly it does kind of annoy me when he's credited as "the" creator of DotA. :/ Reminds me of this actually: Also sorry for my misinterpretation.
I'd imagine they have a system set up that automatically deletes any unseen geometry before the model is sent from character creator to the actual game.
Pay pal has an invoice creator which is all I use. there's a box containing payment terms and such too so if there's a dispute you have that right on it.

You can adjust the proportions in the editor. I think the character creator is fantastic, what lets it down though is the very low print quality of the miniatures :/
