I say just try it out and see how it goes. Duplicate your subtool and zremesh it. You could try for something drastic like lowering your model to about 10 million. Then put your original subtool at your lowest resolution and project all, then work your way up to your highest. If you're happy with the results then you can… -

Topology is certainly not an issue here - recently I've been sculpting some additional details on decimated meshes and haven't had any problems with the pinch brush. They just gave it high amounts of noise specs tiles and boosted up the bloom...I don't see any distortions in the 3rd image, which ice usually has naturally. Also, fog... Which reminds me, did you try the distort function in UDK? -

You should never use a non-realtime rendering method to display game art. Try a viewport shader like 3 point shader for 3ds Max, or a model viewer like Marmoset Toolbag, or an actual game engine like UDK, UE4, Cryengine or Unity. -

I try to keep the shapes readables, so not going to be too fancy, details will come from the base and colors.
