I get this and have always had this. Basically, max is not very reliable when using BG images in the viewports. It's stable if you use the 4 window view and set them all to "non-scale, non-zoom" or something like that. It's in the viewport BG options. However if you switch views with the keyboards (like me) then sometime… -

Not a bad first go chap. A lot of the issues you have with blobbyness are the edge loops aren't straight so defining those curves is made harder. Select the verts one vertical edge loop at a time and goto front or back view and 'Align to View' this will pull them all onto the same plane then goto side view and adjust… -

Haven't learned it much but zbrush has that cloth sim, its wonky for me but that is only because i am face-rolling(equivalent of smashing keyboard with head) into it without reading the doc. I am also interested in anything fun, i think they changed the interface "controls" in MD 9.5 or so and its just a nightmare overall… -
