"I have been practicing drawing/painting for about five years now and, although i have progressed, i feel like i'm nowhere near as good as i should be." Five years is a short time.
Is there some rule that says every katana needs to be decorated? Anyway, I think the katana looks fine, for practice. If you are planning on making something for your portfolio it would probably better to model a higher detailed katana.
@BestiART Thank you for video. That was a really helpful explanation and with your advice now I have a lot of stuff to practice and improve. Also will try to stick more to the references and maybe make something more detailed and complex.

I'm calling this done, this project was pretty successful. I kinda have an idea now on how to paint skin and faces. Might have to practice painting wood and stone sometime. The gif is a bit fast...oh well.
Run a profiler in-game, see whether you're Transform-bound (generally vertices) or Fillrate-bound (generally materials). In practice tho it's hella more complicated. ;) http://wiki.polycount.com/wiki/Framerate_Optimization_Tips https://simonschreibt.de/gat/renderhell/
