You don't have to do the chrome ball if you don't want to, the IBL node in mental ray accepts a ball shaped map or a cross shaped map. Spherical or angular in the IBL settings. I have an old PC with win7, 8GB RAM, GT 730: Max2017 uses 25-30% CPU on standby, but doesn't freeze. :-O 2018 and 2019 uses 0% CPU on standby, but freezes on viewport navigation after max. 30sec. No solution posted here works. Going back to older viewport renderers only results in standby consuming 50..90% CPU resources.… -
