I would definitely do solid hair man. You might be able to get away with doing a solid block with some alpha towards the end like tracer in overwatch as well. The concept is really awesome, I think if you can pull it off this will be quite the piece. Keep checkin those proportions out, you are pretty damn close though. I…
Thanks for the comment Chris! - I made a quick try at the floorboards and I think you're right! It helped making the scene feel bigger, which was much needed. I am however a bit scared of it looking too tiled. I made two variations, should I push it further or is the change noticeable enough? :) I think I'm leaning towards…
Ok problem solved. I figured it might be due to the overlapping UV's in some way. After a bit of research it seemed likely that it could be. Turns out it was overlapping UV's screwing things up. For example the back section of the dial was underneath the UV's for the dial itself. So I went and pulled it down into a…
@octokitty: Heres a quick screengrab from the max viewport. Theres nothing fancy about it to be honest. In this case I probably threw more polys at it than I usually would for an asset this size, because it was always intended to be used as a portfolio shot. I think one of the main things that makes or breaks an asset like…
Hey all :) Many thanks for all the feedback! I am happy with how it turned out, not exactly like concept but just went with what I thought would be good. I never actually intended it to look like anyone, it just went there, and only realised once I did the sculpt. CheeseOnToast : I heard about the buckle from someone else…
Thank you guys for your comments. @kaine123: I will admit that the scythe was done at the very last minute to support the pose in the first image. It was never intended to be part of the character stills, so I really should have taken more care of it. If I will ever come back to it, I will definitely change the top part,…
The render setup was just an Omni+Skylight with Scanline render. The Omni had a orange-red hue to it, the Skylight had a richer blue hue. The Dirt effect was essentially achieved in Photoshop by adjusting the Levels and Hue/Saturation. The different colors of the Late/Early Tiger renders was also achieved with Hue/Sat…
Thanks for the feedback. I actually use both Gnomon an d Digital Tutors videos pretty extensively. I don't really intend to compete with them... I would need more than just myself to do so. I am an educator and I enjoy helping others to learn about the subject area. Most of my material is available for free and I offer a…
Judging by the way you are describing your intended workflow ("I think for this step I would use Automatic retopology, I've seen some good results though I am not sure"" ; Baking (if necessary) = Maya"), tackling a complex 30k character at this time is probably a bad, bad idea. Do not attempt to "figure out" a technical…
Its a mixture, its important you can demonstrate what you intended to achieve. To help understand here is what I look for in a portfolio and why. Composition, Mood and Lighting - They can independently put a beautiful scene together. Technical Ability - They would be able to get straight to work without any help. Reference…
