It definitely has an effect. :) It will convert the XML code over to the SUITE 2.X standard, which will also enable material thumbnails in the DDO window and allow for reimporting, etc.
I realise that the SMB format is supported in max, but is there a script to link XNormal and max? I see that XN can be launched from the command line using XML files. Has anyone written a launcher for max?

I found this MaxScript http://www.klaasnienhuis.nl/2012/09/import-kml-files-in-3ds-max/ it orientated and imported my polygons from google earth fine, but the scale is off.
I think he means the engine compiles it without the need of a transitional xml format like fbx, not that the game engine straight up uses maya files as game data...
