I think generally the best way to go would be to delete the geometry covered by any clothes or armor - if no one's gonna see those polygons, there's no need for them to be there. Depends entirely on the final application. A stylized indie game? A high-end AAA realism game? A tv commercial? When in doubt, just begin by modeling it the way it is constructed in real life. I'd make the stand -- that's just rectangles -- and then I'd make the minimum number of uniquely shaped items and then duplicate… -
