To your proportional changes; the mastiff itself is larger in the concept, thus making the building wider to begin with. So I think you got the top part right, it's the bottom half that's too small. Thanks for your help with rendering. I found that Blender has a screen grab so I no longer need to render. It also displays the texture in real time which is handy for tweaking the texture. Currently at 1278 triangles with a 512x512 texture -

i usually use a tiling bark texture that is 256*512 size or so (tall rectangle like ryno said), since you'll notice the horizontal tiling a lot less than the vertical, and keep my leaves/alphas on a separate sheet since the materials will be split anyway, so no point in keeping the bark and leaves on the same sheet =) . -
