Yeah, it sucks pretty hard - i can only assume it's done for performance reasons and they're betting that most users won't notice. I'd advise making copies into your own library rather than saving over the built in nodes as you'll lose changes with new updates and also occasionally there's a complete replacement of a node… -

You should take a look at using Marvelous Designer, I've never used it but I know a few guys around here use that for fabrics and since there are so many cloth based materials in this scene it could really help sell them! Blender notes, FWIW... In the internal (legacy) renderer, gamma is applied automatically within node groups. You can see what's going on by dropping an RGB input node in and having a look at the values vs. the color scale on the side. i.e. for 50% gray the values will be ~0.5^2.2.
