It doesn't really irk me, I even recognize animation packs that I myself have used... but some indie teams just don't have the capacity/bandwidth to alter content. If it all fits together nicely, then no biggie, it only becomes a problem when it's obvious.

I agree with Pior. It seems to me like it's "trying too hard, by not trying at all". One of the issues is that the people over at IGF found this to be "innovative" enough to push it through the contest, which I find insulting on some level; If I had a game in the contest, I would be upset by that.
Really? It was posted on the news page when it started. There are also usually weekly updates posted there. Also, you could always just periodically check the contest subcategory of the forums. I agree it would be cool to have something on the main page though like "Current Contests: blah blah"
