I suppose the greatest issue is, do you want to be tied down where you live until the kids graduate high school? What if the industry in your area has a down turn, will you want to freelance for a living?
Eastern Europe - outsourcing studio - yes, you can live well since the living costs are so low, I imagine as a freelancer you could earn even more if you work directly with clients over the Atlantic.

haven't heard back from anyone for an internship , 1 person contacted me for a little bit freelancing, and a christian gamecompany sended me an internship offer aaargh the stress day after tomorrow 6 interviews with local companies
Thanks! The Eredan cell shading style is the newest, brought to me through freelancing. Originally I've always liked to work with a more painterly feel, with speedpaint even. In the end, I like experimenting with various styles and keep it interesting :)

Your business major will probably be a fantastic asset anyways, since it will help you navigate taxes, issues related to freelancer status, and so on. All this is pretty much vital and as far as I am aware is not taught at art schools.
no laws in the US, I believe the IGDA is working on crediting guidlines. The only punishment right now is bad press. They are required to verify you worked there if contacted by someone looking to hire you. I'm not sure if it's the same for freelance work.
