Vertex painting is pretty fun to set up, you can usually do up to four vertex effects, using the four channels (R,G,B, and A) to 'pretty-uo' the surface. You just need to 'stack' the layers in a logical order.
If I were to build a lighting portfolio, I'd also build the environments I am lighting. That is not indicative of what you'd be doing in your job as a lighter, but it shows you a.) take initiative and b.) have more skills beyond being a lighter.
Ok. Does it show up in a material instance? You can try to use a component mask with r-g-b ticked in after the blend angle corrected normals function, but I would be surprised if it wouldn't give a vector 3 by default.
Tuberculosis is a problem across most of the world, as is Hep B and myriad others. Most people will be inoculated here in Europe already :) Personally, the only inoculation I'm missing is Yellow Fever, and that's because I've not been out to any affected regions yet.

I have to concur with vj and ubersock. Its not an organic object, I'm not sure what you're going to be sculpting on this. Personally I would use an image-based normal map for the wood. It looks amazing geometry-wise though! d^_^b
Lookin good! Nice use of a warmer color scheme. What I find interesting is the way your background is interacting with your character. The landscape is literally warping behind your character which makes him that much more important >.o b
