The cage determines ray cast distance so there shouldn't be any issues of portions of your model interfering with other areas unless your cage is clipping into itself, so adding a plane is not necessary. Personally, I would recommend making your cage inside Maya. xNormal works fine and all but in my opinion it's just…
Zbrush uses Y up. Typically I will use GoZ to bring models back and forth between the programs so I won't have to worry about orientation (the script "figures it out"). If you export your model out of Maya (or Max) without GoZ you'll need to make sure the "Flip YZ-axis (Poser-like)" checkbox is checked in the .OBJ export…
Are you trying to center and entire piece by using the Move Gizmo, by using the snapping option? Is that what you mean? :D For e.g You have a cylinder with a collapsed floor ( all verts merge to a single point) and you want to center that entire object, by snap moving using the gizmo along the X+Z axis. I've been modelling…
I took a look at the trailer of The Cave, and I noticed this: The three blocks are very similar, but not exactly the same. It looks as though they placed a lot of modular blocks in place, with a slight offset along the depth/z-axis, and then sliced the blocks at a certain distance. Whether this slicing is done through…
This tool is immensely helpful. Thanks for taking the time to develop it. Support for grid axis and number colors would be helpful though. When I hit one of the plugin's grid presets it resets the colors back to maya's almost invisible gray.
Axios: cool work, I'm digging all the cool props in this thread. For that lightning you say you are using a flipbook. I made a similar effect once in UDK with a few tiled textures and some panner material nodes. It might give you smoother animation in-game.
@Linko I'm going to have to agree with Axi5 here about chamfer modeling based on smoothing groups/hard edges being obsolete. Rounded edge technique is simply another approach that works. A vast amount of people still use subdivision modeling. Both methods have benefits and drawbacks. Regardless, OP is using Maya, not any…
