I do something similar with Ace-Angel, in 2011 and lower I would apply a planar map to the whole thing, use point to point seams to draw the seams on the model in the viewport, then relax each chunk, its a bit like pelt mapping but without all the annoying stretcher cage settings and steps. I love using UVlayout over 3ds max uv tools. Advantages: 1. It allows you to group parts together in boxes when packing 2. I have a shelf button set to Map Edge Border and then Relax, this will lay out most UV shells pretty damn fast and give you a good starting point. They had changed the default for the scale tool but switched it back in the first service pack. Also check out the Normalize function of TexTools lowest left button. It will scale or Normalize the UV shells to more or less match in scale.
