Yeah i understand, you can already paint directly on a mask, but it will dissapear if you enter dynamask after that, so its not yet non destructive. But it can be done in a pinch, better functionality for this is coming soon!
Blender has a feature called "shrinkwrapping" and judging from a google search for "shrinkwrapping 3dsmax" there are a few scripts that will give you the same functionality in 3dsmax. Not a max user though, so this may not be the most efficient solution.
Very nice high poly work, what software are you using? If it has a crease function, I would highly recommend using it. Saves allot of unnecessary headaches and allows for a lighter and more managable cage

You can use an xbox 360 controller when actually testing the game in the viewport, and also for controlling cameras for recording. I dont think you can control the basic editing functions of udk with it though :(

NURMS is basically the same as the smooth/smooth preview function in Maya. I haven't seen the tutorial myself, so unless he uses some specific option within that modifier in Max, then it should be the same in Maya.
yeah sadly some maxscript functions only work that way, that the object must be active and modstack visible. same goes with maxscript trying to exec a "maxscript utility", you must open the toolbar mode and so on.
