Concentrate on defining those shapes using absoutely lowest geometry, you have so many edges that are simply doing nothing at the moment and that will as stated above just make all you changes and work slower and harder. Goodluck chap
Sweet progress dude! Keep going!. You are still missing the brightest points on the metal work. Getting the specular highlights painted in properly will help a lot in defining their material. Your on the right track though, just keep painting and studying!
particle distance is the distance between points in your mesh. So it's dependant of the size of your object. Maybe the guy on the tutorial made a bigger curtain, so it looks more defined Lower distance to gain more definition (and longer calculations).

op! Dragon knight showdown. I'm thinking about making the rest of the set for my helm I just finished. I like the second to last one. Yeah, big shapes defined by different colours and your good to go. :)
Oh God I'm getting AutoCAD 2004 flashbacks. This is a good thing, where can I find this menu in Maya? Is there a way to snap at angles as well? In CAD you could define angles or increments, like every 15 degrees.

The template is just a preset that define which nodes are create by default in a new graph. If you used the wrong one, simply create a new graph and copy the nodes into your previous graph and get rid of what you don't need. :)
These two have been getting some much deserved press with this book. They've been defining the Ratchet & Clank games for a decade. They need to do more work with Marvel. I loved the Spider-cat comic they did a bit ago.
