Great! I was actually going to suggest that you consider setting your Max configuration to automatically enable backface culling on object creation to avoid issues like this in the future. That was the default for Max way back in the day.
Demohead (912k verts) and UVS (UV Master default) = 97.1MB Demohead (912k verts) and GUV = 97.4MB Demohead (912k verts) and polypaint (no UVs) = 63.9MB You can also have Decimation Master preserve polypaint.
An old, over poly model that I thought I'd bring into Zbrush for practice. Still getting the base forms down. EDIT: Might as well show this too. Some more practice. Default Rhino from Zbrush.
Cool stuff guys! @ DeathKitten, you'll be able to see your texture much better if you set the material to full self illumination. You can do that in Milkshape by setting the emissive color to white (it's black by default).
There's a setting in the Render to Texture options to choose whether to generate a Tangent-space, or World-space map ... and also what Rooster said, while the preview window shows the default materials, the saved image will be the correct normal map.
I dont have windows 7 but for vista and XP it could be set to automatically do this. perhaps its default now. I've had to revert a few times when window update made shit of my system
Edged faces on selection, and Bounding boxes OFF. That it's the default is mystifying. Just set a maxstart, and you'll never need to see them again, unless you work with someone who doesn't turn them off. Hurrr.
Your unpack min should be -1, sRGB should be unchecked, and compression settings should be TC_Normalmap or TC_NormalmapUncommpressed. When importing a normal map if you set the compression setting to TC_Normalmap the previous 2 settings with be set by default.
PNG is the way to go! Here's a good PS plugin for compression and cleanliness if the default one gives you trouble. http://www.fnordware.com/superpng/ ... Are there any mainstream browsers out there that still don't support true PNG opacity?
I just tried it again and it's working fine, not sure why because I used the default settings both times. Unless I clicked on something and did not notice it, so never mind on my previous comment.
