yeah ive watched all his tutorials already.. the problem is that the wear on his gun was different as the AK is made of plain metal, and not painted as the M4. will definately watch it again though, since it is indeed a while since i watched it
I am in need of a decent new monitor as well, finding one with display port is not as easy I had hoped - shall definately go into my short list for a new monitor. Good price in the UK too :D
Dear god... that cake is definately one of the more disturbing things I've seen in my life... ... ... I may never be able to eat cake again... Anyway!! Lots of birthdays today!! Hope they're good ones :D
Maya doesn't use Smoothing groups per say, It's just defining hard and soft edges. The closest way to mimic them would be going through and hardening the outside edges of the shell/UV island and softening the interior ones.
havent had time to upload the final model jet, so here it comes :) I think it came out pretty ok overall, except the texture/ material. defining material is definitely something I have to get better at :)
try learning how to make a high poly model and bake it for your next one man, definately getting a few more technical skills under your belt will definitely help you to keep improving your art!
I think super long tris are okay, as long as they are defining a surface that is completely flat. the second you bend the normal tangency on a surface with crazy long tris however, you`re going to end up with undesirable results.
While I can see the similarites, the only thing I would say looks close is the bottom piece, I apologize about that as it was definately unintentional. If you want I could pull it from the workshop and change that part?

I would definately start at the Polycount Wiki (very top of the page) for some nice resources. It is really useful for someone starting out. Are you looking to do some environment stuff, character stuff, animation, texturing etc?
