I think the presets let you do either or, the batch bake lets you bake 8 completely different models, make a preset for all 8 projects if that makes sense. Its says "8 CPUS" because technically your computer (I am guessing) only has 8 physical cores. Cores and Threads are completely different. I use PNGs for anything 8 bit RGB and TGA for everything else. But been doing that for 15+ years now. It's crazy this is still an issue.
