If are able to put some particle emitters throughout the model and then mix it with a shader effect and if everything is black, and unshaded, it should all blend together into a shadow looking thing. Actually the smoke screen defense system against beam weaponry is a great idea and totally plausible. You don't need metal fragments. Any reflective substance would do. Lunar dust, crushed gypsum, or even beach sand would be fine. Controlling the density and spread of the field is a function of emission angle and speed.… -
