Go to scene and check scale reference so you see what you are aiming for. The grab your parent geometry (Or make one) and go to edit -> scale mode and grab the manipulator from the middle. That should work.
Grab Blender, grab a book on Blender or read the animation tutorials, and get your feet wet. Being a beginner, don't mess with Maya or Max just yet. They are an investment anyways. Blender is perfectly able to get you started.

for chadwick's solution you could just grab the URL and use substr to grab the category name and url. to make it a live update, make a php file to update your links, and then make an ajax script to access that php file on a timer.
I have the problem with working only the first time too - the trick I've found is to alternate ALT+printscreen and CTRL+printscreen, seems to do the trick. One of them grabs the whole screen and one just grabs the active window.
