simple question
when i have my object selected, and go to modifier list and select unwrap uvw, the EDIT button in the Parameters menu is greyed/blanked out and i can't press it? -

You just have to turn off the blank texture map it creates instead. Then you can keep your UVs, polypaint, and polygroups. -

Ah, I'm using MD4 myself, indeed. Not sure about MD3. In MD4 it's accessible from right clicking on a blank space in the canvas. -
