It's not transparent. Your model had a negative scale before Resetting the Xforms. Simply add a Normal modifier and turn on flip.

Add an Edit Normal modifier, they should appear green, select all of the lines with ctrl+a then hit the reset button on the right.

No need to use the solidify modifier, just use the displacement one and set it to normals works great, that's what I do.

I've used a shell modifier, followed by an extrude on the new shell "thickness" faces, followed by deleting those shell faces.

Have you tried the Offset modifier? It's not a perfect way of doing it but with wrap around it means you can work on the seam.

i would pack it without those overlapping uv shells. afterwards you can use "modify -> snap and stack"
