I think you're making your life harder by making the mask contiguous to the mesh right now for the high-polygon model.

Hey guys in the contest page it says that for the character you have a budget of 6000 polygons. should i assume that as 6000 triangles?

did u use bridge on those edges. if you did thats your problem rite there. use append polygon to fix.

This is probably a sign of something wrong with your geometry. Try using mesh>Cleanup using "select matching polygons" first with these options:

Oh, yes, the UV space s still a problem. Thanks for that. I was more talking about the wasted polygons and rendering time.

It looks very NURBS-like. I'm guessing it's using a NURBS toolset and then throwing a polygon tesselation over the top in real time.

What you see is not islands - it's objects projected onto a single plane. The maps are projected from polygon objects onto a plane.
