To me it looks like you need to reset the xforms of the both the purple and blue splines before doing the modifier.

Copy and merge all you layers and then add a sharpen modifier to that layer. Helped me out a lot in school.

get a section of that model, clone it and deform using subd and a noise modifier. you can try blender as well.
