I generally just export two models, one with the overlapping uvs and another with the uv islands moved off and fit somewhere else. Then load both models in, apply the same material and bake, so when it finishes I can see it on the final model too.
Like asaNYC said the contrast is really strong between the platform and ship in the first two images. Not only the contrast but the lights as well. There is too much taking attention away from the ship, so id say render the ship on a very basic platform or no platform at all.
I just noticed - the transition between the dusty floor and the stony bridge is far too abrupt and really gives it away that this is CG. If you get a good blend between the two (with dust settling between the stones via heightmap) then I reckon it will really push the realism. :)
I think I would prefer something in the middle of those two if possible. The vibrant colours are a little bit too eye attracting to me and the other colours are quite dull. If I had to choose between either I would say the duller colours however.
