DIfferent studios have different rules. Volition allows it so long as it isn't for a direct competitor (so, another open world urban game). Other places are more restrictive. I've done only a tiny amount of freelance art work, but I do make a few hundred dollars a month tutoring art students and aspiring professionals.
Thanks very much! I find it's always good to get critique as I have been out of the industry for 2 years, and if my portfolio is sucky, then it's not setting a great example for the students. I don't want to get complacent now! :P Not only that, it's always great to get a second pair of eyes on it, and my friends are just…
On this one mesh alone, then we'll need to have multiple artists be able to do the same thing over and over again for multiple skins and multiple ships. Faffing around with 3DO and only being able to see one map at a time is really not a good method unfortunately. It would be fine if I was doing a portfolio or student…
Sorry bring up an old question/debate. But why not have more than one color for the table runners, as if they are sectioned for different groups of students: senior, under-grad, freshmen and what not. Same with the flags/banners over head, possibly different seals for different curricula or something... Overall it's…
@everyone, Thanks guys, I will have to do a dust pass over it a some point, I've ran out of time for the moment. I have the CG Student awards due soon and need to get all my entries in! (you can vote for me here if you want XD) Once that's all prepared for, I will smash it out.
Here's three renders of a fantasy classroom that I designed with Modo. The room will be mostly made of wood, but here is just a block out of what it will look like. There will be 32 desks with 32 students, a closet in the back, the room mostly lit with ambient light from the windows, the teacher's desk in front. These…
Hi, Like yourself I'm a student too and again about the same amount of work experience in 3D so dw were all beginners to start with! I can't load up the images on my iPhone but I believe - I've had the same problems in zbrush myself that the normal map needs to be flipped - or so my lecturer told me.
Alright I added a bit more geo and fixed up a few minor points in the texture! I'm thinking of adding some more scratches and broken bits even though it isn't in the concept, just for fun. I'm also going to start doing some pre-vis work on my entry for the Blizzard student art character contest.
From the point of view of another student like you, I noticed it's sometimes easier to think about all this in terms of rows of quads. That is, two edge loops together form a row of quads that flows around the mesh. When a row of quads interacts with other rows (meets, crosses etc.) there's usually some kind of pole around…
Congrats, I'm a student so I apologize for gushing but your work is inspiring to say the least. If you have a snipit of time perhaps you could clue me in to your technique for your scratch here. Is it in the normals? Diffuse? If you don't have time to explain maybe you could post a link to some good tutorials. Cheers.
