I think too many polygons, which do not affect the overall shape. They can be spent, for example in the form of a round shield.

Projection distance, plus increasing the projection shell. It can also help to try and limit where subtools and polygons might overlap.

The only truth is Display - Polygons - Face Normals ! (with the benefit of a mesh now seemingly being coated with funky green moss ! hehe)

Well. I'm talking a vertex movement. A polygon delete. Nothing big at all. And the UV's aren't destroyed. They're completely reset.

...of course 5 min after posting i found the solution. Preferences>Display/Polygons> Display alpha color set as greyscale
