Also try a "Turn To Poly" modifier next time. It shouldn't mess up your smoothing groups.

it's ok if you intend to use a normal map. If not you'd want to play around with the edge split modifier.

We've been using multiple Unwrap modifiers set to different channels to avoid the Transfer/Abandon dialog.

In the Editable Poly modifier, select the edge ring, then set the action center to Use Pivot Centers, and scale.
