dont know if this is just for max 8 and up but, to remove an edge loop as well as it's verts, from the edge sub-object level select your loop, then hold ctl and press remove. All the duplicates are made into unique Subtools. I was using the hotkey to select them before sculpting. If you hold ALT and quickly click a subtool on the canvas it will make that one active so you can sculpt on it.
