I've always had problems making panels for my hard-surface models but lately I've started drawing on the meshes surface directly (Grease Pencil in Blender) to outline the panels and then extract these panels by cutting them out from the original surface with the knife tool. Both of the video cards you mention will have very limited and poor performance texturing in Mudbox 2009 and 2010 because of the small amount of on board vram 256 MB. Mudbox texturing relies solely on the ram on the video card. I would suggest 512 MB minimum and you really should try to get 1 GB vram or more. IIRC Mudbox… -

Textools uses the built in max packer, which is junk. PolyUnwrapper I've heard good things about but haven't tested it myself. Headus UVLayout has a packing system iirc (been years since I last used it) 3D-Coat has a decent UV packer, though it doesn't give you as much control as you may want. IPackThat does the best job… -

I just posted my idea for fun, I wasn't trying to sell a pitch or anything. I just get ideas and want to share them. I generally just find stealth games boring because controls are not at the point where you can properly move around cover and hide. IRL you could curl up near some rocks and hide, but in a game you can't… -

Five. That's the perfect number and it never varies. Each project is the same and has the same needs. But if you don't believe that statement, you could check with the credits of games that interest you. I know they are quite boring to read, but IIRC they sometimes are split into categories by fields people work in or what… -

Something else I'd recommend is doing things that aren't modelling but can still help hone your skills. I.e. Drawing, sculpting, painting. (As Torch pointed out, which I only just read) For example I've been getting into making real props. It's basically 3d modelling but irl. I find that the skills translate quite well… -
