Also for characters with clothing, you can hide seams in the UVs along natural seams in the clothing. Quick Planar Maps followed by a relax work just as well on organics as they do on hard surface models too. Like gsokol said, peltmapping can be used as well, and is perhaps the only time peltmapping can be used right.… -

the education section of zbrush goes over the ui. the eat 3d tutorials shows the same thing but with practical examples especially the first chapters. Shotgun- To me I think the surface texture would be more rough than the image I posted. I imagine my Hunter traveling through all kinds of weather including sand storms. Due to wear and I tear I think his metal armor surface would look more stone like in certain areas. I might tone down the normal map some, plus you wont… -

In the advanced settings of the transfer maps wizard, set it to geometry normals instead of surface normals. Surface normals will give you a seam every time but better interior details, while geometry normals will give you smooth edges but some details might be distorted. As MoP said, the "plasticy" look is pretty much attributable to the first generation of normal mapping tech being limited to fairly simple shaders. These offer control over specular level (brightness of highlight) but no control over glossiness (spread of highlight). That alone makes a big difference in describing surfaces…
