The effect is via hardening all polygonal edges' normals. Texturing is USUALLY flat colors in the texture or vertex coloring.

Better to duplicate the faces in Max. Polygon sub-object mode, select all, Detach as copy and as element, then Flip.

If it's for a high poly model you should just give it thickness. Don't try to conserve polygons when there's no reason to.
