Bungie? Which means its next gen, which doesn't matter, power of 2 has been the standard for years now. Ask them before you do any serious work if that means a 512x512 and a 256x256, or if they really mean a 768x768. I find that a bit silly to require that res, and its probably why the art in the Halo games is never up to… -

It depends on how complicated you want to go, you could get some really good results with sculpting a more compact wing and baking normals off of that. If you want to have a more next-gen and more complicated look, then alpha'd planes will be the best bet. I haven't done any feathered creatures before, so this is all… -

If this is for next-gen than should make a high poly for this and bake normals. Concept isnt bad it just looks really flat since its only a diffuse mapped to it. Not really feeling the mosaic tiles filter overlay on it. Keep messing with it, definitely do some sculpting, im sure you could get something creepy lookin with… -

I would suggest you check out the eat3d.com Next-Gen Texturing tutorial. Even though it's not in maya... I've seen a couple of people who have made threads about doing it in maya instead of 3ds max.
