What you are looking for is the weld selected tool, go into Tools in the edit UVWs and hit the weld selected option

use the selection constrain to select hard edges. or use the auto seams feature in cut hard edges mode.

Methinks it's a selection order thing. Try deliberately selecting edges in the same order for each of the corners of your plane.

Left-click selects a single node/object (in this case the root), middle-click selects the branch (the object + all it's children)

For max, in the UV editor, under the select menu -> "Select inverted polygons" is what I use to check for flipped UVs.

to get rid of the jaggies in photoshop: -select the layer to remove jaggies on -go to the layer menu at the top -select "matting / defringe"
