Maya and Max handle the green channel of the normal map differently since the max is z up and maya is y up. You can take and flip the green channel in photoshop and it should shade correctly. Thanks for the insight guys. Vrav, actually morph targets would be great but our engine here at work doesn't support those. That's been the main issue, keeping it pretty low poly, but still structured in a way that it's still built so it can fold in on itself naturally like a real bird wing without having polys z-fighting… -

With all those techniques (except the purely Z Brush one) I still seem to get nasty artefacts on most fonts. I have to go in and manually edit the polys, which can take 1-5 minutes per letter, but gives you more control in the end anyway. But if you're only going to see the letters from quite far away then these methods… -

If you use method 2 you can focus totally on the design no limits or guides by the basemesh. And you can do everything in Zbrush. A lot of junger Artists like that workflow cause they dont know how to model something from scratch in maya. Or they dont like that workflow. Its not allways faster or cleaner todo everything in… -

I dont do a whole ton of z-brush and what not but isn't 16GB overkill? Who fills up 16GB worth of textures/applications etc. What do most people on here have? And building it yourself by buying the parts is not hard at all. Have you thought of it? Price each of those components on newegg or whatever and see what it comes… -
