To increase the size of the default checker pattern, go to the connected place2dTexture node and adjust the Repeat UV values from 4 (default) to something bigger like 8 or 16. -

Max 8 always worked with one Symmetry for me, Vig. I've never needed two modifiers. Maybe you had "show end result" turned off? -

You'll probably want 8 gigs of ram, a dedicated graphics card, and the best CPU you can afford. It's a lot easier to upgrade a graphics card than the CPU. -

Tiledshot should be double your final size. (usally 8 or higher is good ^^). Half it down in fotoshoppe and it'll get that nice fakes AA, no annoying stair steps. -

I live on an a tiny island in Malaysia, which is a pretty small country to begin with :) You can drive from one end of the country to the other in under 8 hours.
